BARTON ON SEA

METHODIST CHURCH

CHURCH HISTORY

The Methodist Church at Barton on Sea began officially in 1931, services were held at “Rest Harrow” in Barton Lane,  a private residence.

A new church was built and opened during March 1932. A small hall known as the  “annexe” was added in 1951. During 1954 the seating capacity in the church was increased by converting the then vestries and kitchen into a chancel.

The hall was well used and became too small,  a new larger hall was built and opened during 1955.

At a Society meeting in June 1964 a scheme for a new church and ancillary premises was approved and a Building Fund inaugurated. During 1970 the hall was converted for use as a temporary worship–centre; in addition, a lounge was built, together with classrooms, cloakrooms, kitchen and coffee bar.

Services in the “old” church finished during August 1970. The “new” church was opened and dedicated on May 22nd 1971.

The new entrance hall was built, alterations to the kitchen and lounge areas were completed and opened during 1999.

A new improved kitchen has been completed during 2011.

A new project to insulate the premises has started and was

completed September 2014.
